Making significant changes rarely feels . . . comfortable. It’s only later, after you’ve made the change that you’ll look back with a sense of satisfaction and appreciation. But, when you’re toes are hanging over the edge of the high dive; when you’re about to step off into space; in other words, when you’re about to do something that will take courage and skill, you often won’t “feel like it“.
But, don’t wait to feel like it.
Because, that will only make the time delay between today’s sweaty palms and tomorrow’s satisfaction longer. If you’re waiting to feel like it – you’re in the wrong line. It’s the line that never moves.
Get out of line and start moving forward.
You don’t have to leap into the void. Just take a step. Inch your way forward, if need be. But, start to move.
Feelings of doubt, anxiety, and confusion are part of the leadership landscape.
Doubt, anxiety, and confusion come with the territory. They’re part of the package when you’re taking actions that require courage and skill. So, rather than being signals to run from, they’re early indicators that you’re leaning into your discomfort. Which is necessary for growth – individually and organizationally. You’re on the path. These emotions are signposts are beckoning you forward.
I know it’s not comfortable. But, that doesn’t mean it’s not correct. I’m working my way through these same difficult emotions right now as I’m re-inventing, or more accurately renewing the focus of my work. Many days, I don’t feel like it. But, that’s not the point. It’s time to move forward. I welcome traveling companions.
So, where in your work or life are you “waiting to feel like it” before moving forward?
Take a deep breath and let it out. Now, what’s a small, doable, step you can take to move forward?
Take it.
