Many leaders have become sidetracked by focusing too much on managing peoples' resistance to change. But people don't resist change. They resist change for which they see no purpose, no link to their own values and goals.

The real challenge facing leaders is not how to manage resistance but how to manage engagement.

When people are dis-engaged, they will not invest themselves in their work. They will not give that extra energy -- the discretionary effort that can only be given, never commanded. When people are engaged -- their commitment creates organizational breakthroughs.

High fulfillment is measured in terms of meaning, learning, and community.

Temporary bursts of high performance can be achieved through a variety of carrot and stick techniques. But sustained success is always based on a foundation of learning, mastery and community.
